What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

AEO explained in plain language: what answer engine optimisation is, how it differs from SEO, and why it matters for small businesses that want to be found.

AEO (answer engine optimisation) means making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and mention when someone asks a question. Where classic SEO is about showing up in Google’s list of links, AEO is about being part of the answer that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews write. For a small business, it matters because more and more customers ask an AI “who is a good plumber near me?” instead of scrolling through search results.

This guide explains what AEO is in plain language, how it differs from SEO, and what a small business can actually do about it, without jargon and without promises nobody can keep.

What is an “answer engine”?

An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a written answer rather than a list of links. Today that mainly means:

  • ChatGPT, especially when it searches the web before answering
  • Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI summaries at the top of some Google results
  • Gemini, Google’s AI assistant
  • Perplexity, an AI search tool that shows its sources
  • Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa

These tools still need information from somewhere. When they search the web, they read pages, pick out what looks reliable and relevant, and summarise it. Often they show a few links as sources. AEO is about being one of the sources they pick, and about the summary saying the right things about you.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of getting your website to show up when people search on Google or Bing. AEO builds on the same foundation but aims for a different result.

SEO AEO
Where you show up Google’s and Bing’s list of results Answers written by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews
What success looks like Your page appears high in the list and gets clicked Your business is named, described correctly or linked as a source
How people search Short phrases: “plumber Oslo” Full questions: “Who can fix a leaking pipe in Oslo this week?”
What matters most Relevant pages, technical health, links from other sites All of that, plus clear direct answers and consistent facts about you across the web
How you measure it Rankings, clicks, visits (Google Search Console) Mentions and citations in AI answers, which today you mostly check by asking

The short version: SEO gets you into the library, AEO helps you get quoted. We go deeper on whether you need both in SEO vs. AEO: what’s the difference.

Why does AEO matter for small businesses?

Three reasons.

Customers are asking AI instead of searching. Many people now start with a question to an AI assistant, especially for “who should I use” and “what’s the best” decisions. In BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 45 % of US consumers said they had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6 % the year before. If the answer names three competitors and not you, you never get the chance to compete.

AI answers name fewer businesses. A Google results page shows ten links plus maps and ads. An AI answer often recommends a handful of options, sometimes just one. Being in that short list is worth more than being number eight on a results page.

The facts AI repeats about you may be wrong. If your opening hours, prices or services are out of date on directories or old pages, an AI tool can repeat the wrong information with full confidence. Part of AEO is simply making sure the information out there is correct.

How do AI tools decide which businesses to mention?

Nobody outside these companies knows the exact rules, and they change often. But the public documentation gives some solid clues.

  • They rely on what search engines can find. Google says that to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements or special markup needed. In other words, good SEO is the entry ticket.
  • They need permission to read your site. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Many websites block AI crawlers by accident through their hosting or security settings.
  • They look for clear, reliable answers. A page that answers a question directly in the first few sentences is easier to quote than one that buries the answer under marketing language.
  • They cross-check. When several independent sources (your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, local news) agree about who you are and what you do, an AI tool has more reason to trust and repeat that information.

What does AEO work look like in practice?

For a small business, AEO is less about clever tricks and more about a handful of solid habits.

Make sure AI tools can read your website

Check your robots.txt file and your hosting or CDN settings (for example Cloudflare’s bot settings) so that search crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot, are not blocked. This is a five-minute check that can rule out the most common reason for being invisible.

Answer real questions directly

Write pages that answer the questions your customers actually ask: what you do, where, for whom, what it costs roughly, how long it takes. Put the answer first, then the detail. A short FAQ on your service pages helps.

Keep your facts the same everywhere

Name, address, phone number, opening hours, services and prices should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook and the directories you are listed in. Our guide to local SEO and Google Maps covers how to tidy this up.

Get mentioned on other trusted sites

Reviews, local newspapers, industry associations, supplier pages and “best of” lists all give AI tools independent confirmation that you exist and are good at what you do. You cannot buy your way into an AI answer, but you can make it easier to be found and trusted.

Use structured data where it fits

Structured data (a small piece of code that labels your business name, address, opening hours and so on) is not required for AI features, but it helps search engines understand your pages, and many website builders add it automatically.

A quick AEO checklist

  • AI and search crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and your hosting settings
  • Your home page says in one sentence what you do and where
  • Each main service has its own page that opens with a direct answer
  • Your pages include a short FAQ with real customer questions
  • Business name, address, phone and hours match everywhere
  • Your Google Business Profile is complete and up to date
  • You have recent reviews and you reply to them
  • You have checked what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about you this month

How do you measure AEO?

This is still the weakest part of AEO. There is no “Search Console for ChatGPT” yet that tells you how often you were mentioned. The practical approach:

  1. Write down five to ten questions a real customer would ask, such as “best bakery for wedding cakes in Bergen”.
  2. Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google once a month.
  3. Note whether you are mentioned, whether the facts are right, which sources are linked, and which competitors show up.
  4. Look in your analytics for visits coming from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites.

Answers vary from one try to the next, so look for trends over months, not single answers.

What AEO cannot do

Be careful with anyone who promises more than this. AEO cannot guarantee that an AI will recommend you, cannot make up for a weak offer or bad reviews, and cannot control what an AI writes. It makes your business easier to find, understand and trust. That is valuable, but it is not a switch you can flip.

If you want the concrete steps for one tool in particular, read how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT. If you are still building the basics, start with SEO for small businesses.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It means making your business easy for AI assistants and answer features, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, to find, understand and mention when someone asks a question.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AI search optimisation are other names for roughly the same idea. People use the terms differently, but they all describe working to be included in answers written by AI tools.

Do I need AEO if I already do SEO?

Good SEO already covers much of AEO, because AI tools often build their answers from pages that search engines have found. AEO adds a few extra habits on top: clear direct answers, consistent business facts across the web, and being mentioned on other trusted sites.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. AI tools decide for themselves what to include, and their answers change from one question to the next. Anyone who guarantees a mention is promising something they cannot control.

How do I know if AI tools mention my business?

The simplest check is to ask them. Write down five to ten questions a customer would ask, put them to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity every month, and note whether your business is named, which sources are linked and what competitors appear.
